What Is A Tinted Sunscreen?
A tinted sunscreen is a mineral-based sunscreen formulation with an added color base that can help even out skin tone while protecting your skin. Thus, a two-in-one benefit.
Components In A Tinted Sunscreen
On the Health Harvard Blog; tinted moisturizers help to protect your skin from Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and visible light from the sun and artificial sources, including medical devices, screens, and light bulbs.
Normally, the broad-spectrum, non-tinted sunscreens contain filters that block UVA and UVB. However, these formulations are not designed to block visible light.
To block visible light, sunscreen must be visible on the skin. Because the particles in broad-spectrum, non-tinted sunscreens are made smaller to help reduce the white appearance of sunscreen (white cast), non-tinted sunscreens, therefore, cannot block visible light.
On the other hand, tinted sunscreens combine broad-spectrum mineral UV filters, like titanium dioxide, and zinc oxide, with added pigments like pigmentary titanium dioxides and iron oxides. These create the visible, skin-tone color that can reflect away visible light.
Thus, thanks to their ability to block visible light, tinted sunscreens may help certain skin conditions like reducing hyperpigmentation.
Why Tinted Sunscreens?
Tinted sunscreens are lightweight, and keeps your skin looking fresh throughout the day.
Some of the best-tinted sunscreens are non-comedogenic, thus, they don’t clog your pores. While some heavy, greasy sunscreens can cause breakouts, a good tinted sunscreen is fast-absorbing.
If you wear a form of a base on your skin daily, for instance, foundation, powder, or a few concealer dabs, then you’ll appreciate a tinted sunscreen, for its coverage. They add a sheer tint of color that enhances your complexion.
They are also excellent at evening out skin tone and are especially ideal for busy mornings when you don’t have time for a full face beat, and even for touching up throughout the day.
Tinted sunscreens don’t leave any white cast. They will blend into the skin easily and enhance your natural skin tone.
Also, on the Health Blog, ” if you have sensitive skin, tinted sunscreens are oftentimes considered safe than traditional chemical sunscreens because the addition of tint is typically to offset the zinc and titanium (these are ideal ingredients to use for sunscreen in people that have sensitive skin because they are much less likely to irritate than the traditional chemical sunscreens)
Says Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.
That said, the only real danger associated with tinted sunscreen is an allergy to the tint itself, which is “highly unlikely.”
Tinted sunscreen may look like makeup, but it is sunscreen and should be applied like regular sunscreen. Every two hours, and after swimming or sweating!
Choosing The Best Tinted Sunscreen
Tinted sunscreens come in several different formulas – liquid, cream, powder- and finishes – dewy, matte, satin- and feature sheer-, medium-, and full-coverage options.
So whether you’re looking for a fabulous all-in-one product or just want to double up on your SPF, there is something for everyone.
However, when finding the best tinted sunscreen for your skin, you want to consider these tips:
1. Go for SPF 30 or higher
Dermatologists recommend choosing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher. This ensures your product will protect your skin against both UVA and UVB rays. The formula could be tinted, but, you still want it to act as a strong sun protector.
While darker skin types can use a lower level, such as SPF15, as they have more melanin in their skin, which gives some protection from sunburns, SPF 30 is still better.
2. Look for a Moisturizing Option
Choose a tinted sunscreen with a hydrating base; including moisturizing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or ceramides.
These ingredients allow the product to smoothly blend into the skin and will improve your skin with continued use.
3. Look for the Highest Concentration of Zinc Oxide in the product
Zinc oxide is a mineral-based compound that offers broad-spectrum protection against UVB and UVA rays, without being harmful.
When aplied to the skin, it creates a protective seal that reflects away UV rays. Thus, giving you the best protection.
4. Know your Skin Type
Like any other skincare product, the formulation of your tinted sunscreen matters, so you want to choose one that sits well on your skin.
” If you have acne or oily skin, make sure that your sunscreen is labeled as ‘non-comedogenic while if you have dry skin, look for moisturizers with sunscreen or sunscreens that contain hydrating ingredients.
For sensitive skin, opt for a physical, or mineral, sunscreen which features zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to protect skin; these two ingredients won’t burn or sting eyes, Emily Smith, MD, a dermatologist at University of Missouri Health Care says.
5. Don’t Forget to Reapply
Most of us also forget that SPF is only at its most active for about two hours, so you need to reapply it often.
Even with tinted formulas, reapply every two hours, or after swimming or sweating. Especially, use as the last step in your skincare routine.

About My Skin: Oily Skin That’s Very Reactive & In Need Of SPF
I have oily skin that is very reactive. Within 3 days, I always know whether or not to continue with my product as my skin will either react negatively or positively to a product.
I also live in an urban area with at least 300 days of sun time around the year, and that means, my skin has exposure to environmental aggressors, not just from the sun, but also, other pollutants.
I also have dark spots and hyperpigmentation. That means, wearing sunscreen is fundamental.
And thanks to my oily skin, most of the sunscreen formulae I’ve used in the past gave me breakouts because they were comedogenic and clogged my pores.
Its Price & Value: Worth It, But Can Be Pricey For Its Size
The Skin Caring BB Fluid with Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 PA++++ is priced at $46 for a 50ml bottle.
I must say that this tinted sunscreen delivers value. My oily skin has had a good time that even with my re-application after every few hours, I’ve not experienced any blocked pores at all. That means, it is worth the price!
My only concern is that the bottle is pretty small, thus, the product might not last very long because, to get the full SPF benefits, I’d need to apply every few hours. That makes it quite expensive.
This tinted sunscreen comes in quite a small bottle with a lid that opens up easily.
The Scent: Fragrance-Free
The Skin Caring BB Fluid with Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 PA++++ is fragrance-free. So, if you’re sensitive to fragrance in your product, you may be comfortable using this.
Ingredients & Their Quality: Good-for-the-Skin Formulation
If you’re looking for a sunscreen with added skincare benefits, look no further!
This tinted sunscreen contains Polyhydroxy Acids (PHAs) to provide renewing hydration, as well as an ultra-fine mineral sunscreen, Vitamin E, and Green Tea that extract help protect against daily environmental aggressors.
The formulation is designed for all skin types, including those with sensitive skin. For those with oily skin like me, this non-acnegenic and non-comedogenic formula is right up your alley.
In terms of SPF, this sunscreen uses 7% Titanium Dioxide and 6% Zinc Oxide to protect the skin.
However, this tinted sunscreen is not waterproof. So, use a water-resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating. Otherwise, simply apply this sunscreen daily and reapply after swimming.
Its Texture & Feel: Very Light & Fluid
It has a very light texture. You’re advised to shake the bottle in order to mix it well.
Since it’s very fluid, it tends to run and can drip if a lot of the product is used. So, you want to use small portions of the sunscreen as you blend it into your skin then move to the next area.
It’s so easy to apply this tinted sunscreen as the last step of my morning routine skincare.
With first use or after a period of non-use, shake the bottle vigorously for at least 1 minute to achieve a uniform consistency.
During periods of regular use, shake vigorously for at least 15 seconds before use.
Apply liberally to face, neck, and other exposed areas, 15 minutes before sun exposure.
The best part is that the product won’t make your skin sticky, and because it dries quickly, I can apply the make-up right away. It’s also tinted just enough to smoothen out my skin thus covering any uneven skin tone.
The Results: Even Skintone That’s Moisturized
The tint in this product smoothens out my skin and thanks to its hydrating formula, I receive moisturizing benefits too. Actually, sometimes, I don’t wear my moisturizer and only do a Vitamin C cream underneath after cleansing.
The combination of my Beautycounter Vitamin C serum and this tinted sunscreen is giving me such amazing results. My skin is brigter now and the hyperpigmentation has significantly reduced.
Also, since this product leaves no white cast, I’m so happy about it and can confidently reapply it without any extra foundation coverage.
This tinted sunscreen is very rich in its formulation and non-comedogenic. So, it’s never clogged my pores.
However, I noticed that when I used a very rich moisturizer/day cream then applied the sunscreen on my face, they was too much richness and my forehead started growing back my fungal acne.
To hack that, I wear this tinted sunscreen with a lightweight moisturizer that is gel-like. My skin loves it that way!
Our Verdict: Definitely, Worth It!
The Skin Caring BB Fluid with Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 PA++++ is by all means worth it! It might be pricey for the bottle’s size but it delivers value.
The tinted formula that smoothens the face is great, even for dark skin babes like me. It protects and adds extra hydration to the skin, so I love it!
Fortunately for my skin, I’ll definitely be buying it in the future!
Good skincare habits for sun protection, like wearing sunscreen and avoiding burns, by covering up nicely, finding shade and wearing sunscreen really pay off in the long run.
This is important because excess sun exposure can be responsible for dryness, wrinkles, and discoloration that build up slowly in the skin over time. So, be safe!
