While cleansing, moisturizing, and wearing sunscreen are the most important skincare steps that can help you maintain healthy skin, exfoliation is also another step we cannot afford to skip.

Usually, the skin naturally sheds dead cells. However, it can’t always get them all off and this natural process tends to slow over time.

Dermatologist Dr. Emily Arch explains on Brydie that those dead cells sit and when they accumulate for long enough, one can end up with a ton of complexion concerns—think dullness, clogged pores, flaky patches, and visible fine lines.

This also makes it much harder for all of your skincare products to penetrate, ultimately rendering them less effective.

Thus, the importance of including an exfoliator to your skincare routine to help create a smoother, softer, and brighter complexion. Also, to allow skincare products to penetrate your skin well, and even your makeup application process.

There are two types of exfoliators for your face:

  • Chemical exfoliants, which contain ingredients (usually acids or enzymes) that break down the sugars in the skin, which then causes the cells of the epidermis to loosen and slough off, ” says Garnier consulting dermatologist Dr. Diane Madfes.
  • Physical exfoliants, which have grainy ingredients that slough off the skin, chemical exfoliators use ingredients with a low pH to help loosen dead skin cells.

Both of these exfoliants can be equally effective and it comes down largely to a matter of both personal preference and skin type.

Benefits of Exfoliating Your Skin

1. Exfoliating Unclogs Your Pores

Exfoliating your skin helps to effectively unclog your pores, preventing the formation of blackheads and whiteheads (and even acne), according to Lily Talakoub, MD, of McLean Dermatology and Skincare Center.

This is because it sloughs off any dry or dead skin and other debris that might remain on your skin after cleansing; stopping it from clogging your pores.

2. It Helps Other Skincare Products To Penetrate Deeper & Better

Unclogged pores that are free from dead or dry skin make it easy for skincare products to penetrate the skin layers, so they can work more effectively.

3. It Evens Out The Skin Tone & Makes It Glow

Exfoliants help to break down dead skin while at the same time smoothing its overall texture, making the skin appear more uniform over time.

This can also help to boost your skin’s overall radiance because cell turnover makes the skin looks more glowing, Read more benefits on exfoliation on the Brydie Blog HERE.

Indeed, exfoliation is vital for more radiant skin. I’m currently using the Codex Beauty’s Bia Exfoliating Face Wash and in this article, I share my honest review.

About My Skin: Oily Skin with an Uneven Texture

I have oily skin that is quite eneven. It has definitely improved due to my skincare routine.

However, I still suffer textured skin, and my skin thrives upon exfoliation, twice to thrice a week. The area around my nose and chin gets really clogged, develops whiteheads and the pores become really large.

My forehead area tends to develop fungal acne when I use very rich products as well.

I’ve used sugar particles in the past to gently scrub my face clean, I still do this once in a while, and my skin still loves it. This gentle alternative always works for me!

But one thing, my skin enjoys exfoliation! Whether I use physical or chemical exfoliants, it does well. However, since my skin tends to be quite reactive, I use chemical exfoliants once to twice a week to avoid much irritation from too much product concentration.

The Feel & Texture: Creamy & Grainy

The Bia exfoliating face wash is a white cream with jojoba grains in its consistency. You can feel the grains as you scrub your face gently.

Since it is also formulated with natural essential oils, you can see how the creamy consistency leaves off an oily trail behind, thus, after application and even washing your face, your skin is not left dry and itchy. Instead, very refreshed and ‘oiled’.

The Ingredients: Green & Clean!

I love how Codex Beauty endevours to use natural products in their formulations, let alone, how they are made using biotech processes that strive to maximize sustainability at every step.

The key ingredients : elderflower tones and firms the skin, while castor oil clears the pores and evens the skin tone. Milk thistle soothes the skin and reduces redness.

Jojoba grains are also present in its formulation to provide light exfoliation. This combination is just what my skin needs!

The Bia exfoliating face wash is a cleanser and exfoliator, in one.

To use it, I dampen my face with water and use two to three pumps of the face wash to smoothen over my face and neck. While the product lathers, it does not produce too much foam as a normal cleanser would.

This makes it easy to scrub your skin clean. I scrub my skin in circular motions for at most a minute then rinse it off. I noticed that if I kept on scrubbing my face for longer, I feel a tingling sensation so I don’t recommend over-exfoliation.

After rinsing it off, I apply my moisturizer, and water sleeping mask.

This product can be very nourishing, so make sure you pair it with a lightweight moisturizer, especially, if you have oily skin.

While my skin thrives off exfoliation, I exfoliate between once to twice a week, and preferably, during the night so my skin can get to regenerate.

Skin Tip…

During the day, our skin is busy protecting us from environmental damage and it switches into recovery mode at night. This is when the layers of the skin turnover, bringing new, fresh skin cells to the surface.

Thus, an evening exfoliation can help prepare your skin for its natural turnover cycle, resulting in a clearer complexion and fresher, healthier skin.

Also, if you have sensitive skin, consider exfoliating during the night when your skin has a longer time to recover. This is because the act of massaging an exfoliator into your skin can increase circulation and blood flow, thereby making your skin temporarily flushed.

Exfoliating at night may be your best option!

Results: Instant Smooth Skin

I always want an exfoliator that makes my skin feel smoother as soon as I’m done rinsing it off —and this is one of them.

Thanks to the jojoba beads, you can slightly feel the sloughing as you massage it onto your skin. And once you rinse your face off, it is not only cleaner, but also, smoother and softer.

My face also feels plumper because the Bia exfoliating face wash does not strip off your skin oils, instead, nourishes it with the amazing blend of ingredients. The natural oils leave you skin intact,a nd not tight at all.

Upon continuous usage, your skin becomes even smoother and has a nice glow as well.

Skin Tip…

Remember, if you notice any signs of redness or irritation, perhaps due to over-exfoliation, stop using the product for a while because your barrier might have been damaged. And once you get back to it, stick to exfoliating once a week.

Value: Worth the Spend

For £43, this 125ml bottle might seem quite expensive. But for an exfoliator, it is actually not that expensive.

You won’t be using this product daily, and since I use mine the Bia exfoliating Face Wash just twice a week, it has lasted me long. It’s been two months and I’m still using it.

You only need two or three pumps to cover your entire face and neck, and since it lathers, one bottle will last you quite some time—even if you’re using it every single day.

Verdict: Perfect for Dry Skin!

I am thoroughly impressed with this product and can’t wait to see the cumulative effects as I continue to use it once a week.

In theory, exfoliating can leave your skin a little dry, which can be especially problematic if your complexion is already on the dry side, to begin with.

But that doesn’t mean you should skip this super important skincare step. The key is simply to find an exfoliant with added hydrating ingredients; like the Bia exfoliating face wash by Codex Beauty.

Thus, I recommend this exfoliating face wash to those with dry skin. It will suit you best!

This formula also doubles as a cleanser and is gentle enough for daily use, perfect for those who don’t want to deal with an extra step in their skincare routine.

I have fungal-acne-prone skin that is oily, and the oils in this face wash made me very skeptical. (Check its ingredients list on Folliculitisscout HERE) However, since I use it once a week, and follow with a lightweight moisturizer, my skin has been able to take it.

(I’ll share any updates after two more months in case this exfoliating face wash nurtures fungal acne on my forehead.)

Skin Tips..

Note that how often you exfoliate depends on both your skin type and the strength of treatment you decide on.

If your skin is oily, you may be better off exfoliating up to once a day, whereas those with dry or sensitive skin should only get their scrub on once or twice a week.
